Terri Bright, director of behavior services at MSPCA-Angell in Boston. New evidence suggests that behavior consistent with trauma may be inherited through DNA, says Dr. “The reality is that many pets with perfectly adequate, loving backgrounds develop fears, anxieties, and phobias based on lack of socialization to a given stimulus as a juvenile.” “While most owners of a fearful rescued animal assume it’s been abused, relatively few pets actually are,” Stelow says. Liz Stelow, chief of service of Clinical Animal Behavior Service at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at University of California, Davis. These behaviors don’t always result from emotional trauma, however, says Dr. Sarah Wooten, a veterinarian based in Colorado, says the type of trauma experienced isn’t as critical as what the pet learns from the experience. If you are wondering if your pet need to go to counseling to explore past issues, the answer is no. ![]() Trauma can also manifest as “shaking, hiding, urination and/or defecation when the trigger attempts to interact, howling, pacing, excessive vocalization, and panting,” says Pia Silvani, director of behavioral rehabilitation at the ASPCA’s Behavioral Rehabilitation Center. “Dogs and cats may attempt to escape or flee situations where frightened, they may become aggressive when interacted with or if forced out of a hiding spot, may freeze or show avoidance behaviors such as hiding or becoming still, and fidget by pacing, jumping up, or repeatedly pawing at their owners.” Kelly Ballantyne, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Like humans, traumatized cats and dogs can develop fear and anxiety disorders, says Dr. Signs of Emotional Trauma in Cats and Dogs Veterinarians and behavior experts are effectively treating animals who suffer from trauma-driven fear and anxiety. ![]() Frank McMillan, a research veterinarian and director of well-being studies at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. “The animal can’t tell us what happened to him earlier in life, and whether his fears now come from a traumatic experience or something else,” says Dr. Research on emotional trauma in companion animals is lacking, in large part because of the language barrier. Thankfully, treatments are available to help them heal.īut what exists for companion animals who’ve been traumatized? Cats and dogs are sentient beings, after all, and can be impacted by bad domestic situations, abusive environments, and neglect. People who’ve lived through traumatic events may experience symptoms consistent with depression and anxiety years later.

![]() So, their limitations are legally binding for anybody who subsequently buys the property. In legal terms, restrictive covenants " run with the land." In other words, they apply to the property itself, and not the specific owner who makes the agreement. The covenant is typically written into the deed, or referenced in the deed and kept on file with a county or municipal government, or with a private entity like a homeowner's association. In the simplest terms, a restrictive covenant is an agreement between a property owner and other parties that limits the use of a property. How can this be? You don't remember signing any covenant. It turns out your property is subject to a restrictive covenant banning any pools on the premises. Then, you get a note in your mailbox from your neighborhood association. You've even got a brand new bathing suit waiting in the dresser for the first hot day of summer. You paid the contractor the deposit last week, and they're scheduled to come break ground on Monday. Should a homeowner bring a lawsuit against the HOA for selective enforcement of a clear violation, such as making structural changes without approval, failure to paint a home, failure to pay for agreed-upon services, etc., then the HOA may be able to file a countersuit to compel the homeowner to comply with the CC&Rs and to compensate the HOA for their legal expenses. That new pool in the backyard is going to be perfect. This can create a cascade of legal bills that are easily avoided through uniform enforcement of the CC&Rs. ![]() This often extends beyond the current board and involves investigating the actions of previous boards and their handling of CC&R violations. If this fails, plaintiffs can attempt to establish that the HOA has engaged in a pattern of selective enforcement. Homeowners who feel that they are victims of selective enforcement will often draft a letter to the HOA identifying the alleged violation and countering with evidence that either A) they are not a violation, B) the board is selectively enforcing CC&R’s by allowing other homeowners to commit the same violation, and/or C) requesting a hearing to discuss the alleged violation. Further, the HOA has a duty to all homeowners to treat each member fairly, honestly, and without favoritism. In the eyes of the law, all homeowners within an HOA have the same rights and responsibilities. There are many reasons that an HOA should not selectively or prejudicially enforce CC&Rs. Legal Liability for Selective Enforcement It is a vicious, downward cycle that is easily prevented through equal enforcement. ![]() Over time, this can significantly erode the effectiveness of the HOA, reduce revenue, and diminish home values within the community. It erodes trust in the HOA and creates a sense of “If neighbor X doesn’t have to abide by the rules, then why should I?” When HOAs selectively enforce these rules, it creates an unfair burden on homeowners who adhere to the CC&Rs. At the same time, homeowners agree to abide by these rules and expect that these rules will be obeyed by their neighbors. HOAs agree to enforce these rules uniformly and without favor to all who purchase property within the community. HOAs are charged with protecting the rights and property values of homeowners (the HOA’s members) in the common interest community. ![]() The Importance of Equal Enforcement of CC&Rs Of course, an HOA can always counter such suits by bringing a lawsuit against the homeowner for violating the CC&Rs. Failing to enforce these uniformly within the community can expose the HOA to selective enforcement lawsuits. HOAs are required to uniformly enforce all covenants, conditions, and restrictions within a community. Honolulu Rail Cost On The Rise As Electric Hookups To Customers Along The Line Are Factored In April 4, 2023īut at a few of the meetings, residents still expressed concerns over the changes. Some riders also said they were excited about the rail’s cleanliness and speed. “People were pretty happy to see the amount of new service we deployed,” Nouchi said, citing an over fourfold increase in bus riders on what used to be Route 74 in Aiea Heights and Halawa Heights. ![]() In response to concerns about the bus being used to prop up rail, Dos Santos-Tam said, “I think if you think of them as two separate entities maybe that criticism is fair, but this is part of one system.”įor the past several months, DTS has been on a press junket, making appearances at neighborhood boards including Waipahu, Kalihi and Aiea in an attempt to prepare residents for the impending changes. “I think the rail leaders are trying to justify the cost of the rail and the cost of operating it right now,” Kent said.īut chair of the City Council’s transportation committee Tyler Dos Santos-Tam urged people to think about bus and rail as “one integrated system.” Increase On Route 74 “The rail leaders need to try to get as many people on the rail as they can because the numbers are really low right now,” said Joe Kent, executive vice president of the Grassroot Institute, a fiscally conservative policy group. Alternative routes suggested by DTS showed upticks in ridership in the week following the changes, although several of those route’s ridership numbers have returned to June levels since then.Įlizabeth Joven, who also had her Route A stop in Waipahu removed, has forgone rail for the Route E bus which drops her downtown, then she backtracks on the 51 bus to get to work in town. Part of the issue may be that riders are opting for other bus routes instead of taking the Skyline, then transferring to another bus at Aloha Stadium. Huge crowds of Honolulu residents rode the rail at no cost in its opening days. In the most recent week of full data, the Skyline saw its lowest ridership totals to date, excluding promotional days. The truncated rail line has meant limited utility and thus, ridership. The goal with the changes is to let “Skyline kind of take over the segments that Route A used to represent before,” said Jon Nouchi, deputy director of the Department of Transportation Services.īut for residents like Pang the changes have altered daily routines for the sake of a rail line that, as Pang points out, “is empty.” ![]() That line now ends at Pearlridge instead of Waipahu, and bypasses the Kalihi Transit Center and North King Street to run along the rail. The most significant change affected Route A, which previously served an average of roughly 5,000 daily riders. Meanwhile, the city’s Department of Transportation Services introduced several bus route changes in tandem with the opening, including six modifications and 12 new routes throughout neighborhoods including Kalihi, Pearl City and Waipahu. ![]() The rail is also currently only running until 7 p.m. But it has still been slow going, with service running on just under 11 miles of the roughly 19-mile project, from East Kapolei to Aloha Stadium, while key locations like the airport and Chinatown wait for the next phase. Ushering in a new era of transportation, Skyline began its first phase of operations last month with great fanfare after years of delays and cost overruns. She has arthritis and so needs to minimize the amount she walks. Instead, to get to work, Pang takes the Skyline rail past her old bus stop all the way to Aloha Stadium, where she then catches the Route A bus back the way she came to her office. Some transit users have struggled to integrate the Skyline rail system and new TheBus routes into their daily commutes. She used to be able to take the Route A bus straight from Waipahu to her office in Aiea, but with the launch of the Skyline on June 30, the Route A bus no longer runs from her neighborhood. “That’s the bus I used to catch,” Pang, 52, says, pointing to the Route A bus stopped below. Gliding above Kamehameha Highway on Honolulu’s new Skyline rail, Jennifer Pang passes over Pali Moma Street. City transportation officials say the goal is “one integrated system.” But the changes have made commutes more difficult in some cases. ![]() Users can set the brushes’ opacity, jitter, size, angle, and shape. ![]() Photoshop brushes are also very customizable. The three characteristics of isosceles triangles are that they have two equal sides, two equal angles, and a third side that is longer than the other two sides. What are 3 characteristics of isosceles triangles? The hypotenuse is always the longest side of an isosceles triangle. The third side of an isosceles triangle is called the "hypotenuse", and it is the side that is opposite of the right angle. The two angles that are equal are called "congruent angles", and the sides of the triangle that are equal are called "congruent sides". An isosceles triangle also has two angles that are equal to each other. The word "isosceles" comes from the Greek word "ισ?σκελος", which means "equal-legged". What is an isosceles triangle in geometry?Īn isosceles triangle is a triangle with two sides that are equal in length. The third side of the triangle is the hypotenuse, and it must be longer than either of the other two sides. The rules of an isosceles right triangle are that the two sides of the triangle must be equal, and the angle between those two sides must be 90 degrees. We hope that this blog post was helpful in providing a better understanding of this topic for those who are currently studying geometry or who will be doing so in the future!įAQ What are the rules of an isosceles right triangle? In conclusion, we have discussed what an isosceles right triangle is as well as some of its key properties and derivations. This produces two congruent 30-60-90 degree triangles which can then be combined to form an isosceles right triangle. Another way to derive an isosceles right triangle is by starting with an equilateral triangle and then bisecting both angles and one side. From here, one can then connect the two squares at their respective vertices to create an isosceles right triangle. This creates two smaller squares, each with its own side length and area. The most common method is to start with a square and draw its diagonal. There are also a few different ways to derive an isosceles right triangle. This can be represented using the following equation: a=√(c^2−b^2), with b and c being the lengths of the other two sides. ![]() In addition, another important property to know is that the length of each leg of an isosceles right triangle is equal to the square root of the sum of the squares of the other two sides. This can be represented using the following equation: c = a x b. ![]() One well-known property of an isosceles right triangle is that the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the product of the lengths of the two other sides. These types of triangles are important in geometry and have several unique properties that distinguish them from other types of triangles. Because of this, the triangle can also be referred to as a "45-45-90" triangle. ![]() This topic will be beneficial for students who are currently studying geometry or who will be doing so in the future.Īn isosceles right triangle is a type of triangle that has two sides of equal length and one right angle. The ocular examination should also include ocular mobility/entrapment, or periorbital ecchymosis (Raccoon eyes). The pupillary size and response, as well as eye movements should be assessed. This will identify conditions, that require immediate intervention.Įvents/environment related to injury: What happened (example mechanisms such as blunt, penetrating, burns or any hazardous environment, such as exposure to chemicals, toxins or radiation. If deterioration of clinical status is noted, primary survey should be repeated and evaluation of ABCs should be started. Since trauma is a dynamic process, frequent reassessment is required in patients with trauma. The purpose of the secondary survey is to obtain pertinent historical data about the patient and his or her injury, as well as to evaluate and treat all significant injuries not found during the primary survey by performing a systematic, complete examination. ![]() It should be performed after the primary survey, and initial stabilization is complete. It is helpful to set the priorities for continued evaluation and management. The secondary survey is a rapid but thorough head-to-toe examination assessment to identify all potentially significant injuries. Occult injuries may be missed and delayed diagnosis can contribute to morbidity and mortality. Not all injuries are immediately apparent in trauma patients. This evaluation ensures that all potentially life-threatening conditions have been identified and satisfactorily addressed. Therefore, secondary survey occurs both in series and in parallel with the primary survey. However, in patients with multi-system trauma, evaluation and management can often occur simultaneously. This part of evaluation should not be performed until the primary survey is completed. Rendering care to a trauma patient can be a challenging endeavor due to the potential for numerous injuries. |
